STORY

Bakugenjin Village is a Japanese hippie commune that has been around since the 1960’s. The Full Moon Festival has been held every summer since the 1970s. The organizer Maasai who has co-built the village, has handed the organizer role to the next generation, Yuuki and Ume.    Let’s celebrate and connect, and create a wonderful world together!

About the location

Bakugenjin Village is located in Kawauchi Village, Fukushima Prefecture. It about 3.5-hour drive from Tokyo, and about an hour drive from Sendai and Iwaki.

Pease note that the access road from the R399 turn-off to the festival site is very rough and narrow. It takes about 15 minutes. Please take the utmost care and drive slowly!

See ACCESS page for details. https://shorturl.at/uBCV8

In the mid-1960s, a group of young drop-outs gathered in search of an utopia when counterculture such as beatniks and hippie movement was starting to happen in Japan too. With no electricity, gas, or running water, they started building a village from scratch and living in self-sufficient ways. (History of Bakugenjin Village: https://shorturl.at/rtyC6

Currently, the only residents are the Maasai family who manage the Village, and their neighbors, however many people from all over the country as well as overseas come for the festival and other events held there.    Come and experience the Japanese hippie commune where electricity is generated by solar panels and water is supplied from rivers and underground water. It’s an off-grid village where you can take a break from internet. There is no cell phone signal.

There is a big river flowing, and great nature surrounds everything here.

We think it's a place where you can really feel freedom.

We will be campingin the great outdoors so please bring your own tent and other necessary items.
